EMC Celebrates International Women's Day!

In anticipation of the upcoming ‘International Women’s Day’, to be held March 8, 2022, EMC has interviewed several women from across our organization to further understand and explore their experiences as women in the construction and nuclear industry.

Meet Angie Thede, our Onboarding and Training Lead Coordinator!

How did you first enter the construction / nuclear industry?

 I first entered construction in 2004 when I joined a company called Murray Demolition. This company was hired to take down the Heavy Water Towers at the Bruce Power site. It was a great experience to work with Murray Demolition, once my contract was finished with Murray Demolition my Nuclear experience began. I spent numerous years supporting the restart from 2006-2014.  I enjoyed my experience working on the restart!

What do you think is the most significant barrier to female leadership or participation within the workplace?

I think one of the barriers is that it is assumed that because you are a woman you do not have enough knowledge in the work force.

How have you been able to overcome this barrier?

Confidence, good leadership, and a good team.

What are the best examples of positive change in the workplace that you have noticed in the past five years?

A positive change that I have seen is that more woman are joining the skilled trades. I am always proud to see woman of all ages joining a skilled trade.

How have you built confidence or resiliency over the course of your career?

My confidence was built by having amazing mentors, if you have good leadership you will be able to perform the work with confidence, and good relationships with your peers.

What strategies do you use to promote inclusion in the workplace?

Communication.

What, or who inspires you?

I have had so many people that have inspired me, the woman who have moved up to management positions from where they started inspires me, the relationships that I have built over the years with is the best part of my work.

What advice would you give to young women entering this profession or industry?

The advice I would give is to show your value, never give up, you have the access to all opportunities, embrace this opportunity to grow and succeed.
