EMC Celebrates International Women’s Day!

In anticipation of the upcoming ‘International Women’s Day’, to be held March 8, 2022, EMC has interviewed several women from across our organization to further understand and explore their experiences as women in the construction and nuclear industry.

Meet Emily Metherel, an apprentice with CUSW (Canadian Union of Skilled Workers):

How did you first enter the construction / nuclear industry?

I entered the construction and nuclear industries through CUSW!

What do you think is the most significant barrier to female leadership or participation within the workplace?

I think there is still a slight stigma with women in the workplace generally; especially in the trades. We have come so far and I haven't really noticed anything in the local nuclear industry that is a barrier. If anything, I just don’t to be treated differently -I’d like to be treated as equals - not lesser or greater or special.

How have you been able to overcome this barrier?

I've always been a very confident person and I am eager to learn so I have no problems stepping in to ask questions or to ‘get on the tools’ as they say. All the journeyman that I have worked with so far have let me do so.

What are the best examples of positive change in the workplace that you have noticed in the past five years?

I haven't been here for very long - I am a first term apprentice, and being brand new to the trade I haven’t had a lot of experiences. I’m looking forward to the next five years!

How have you built confidence or resiliency over the course of your career?

Tough skin, the want to succeed and desire be successful. I get all my strength from my little girl Fionna, everything I do is for her and she needs to be shown by example.

What strategies do you use to promote inclusion in the workplace?

I try to include everyone in my conversations, I am not afraid to work with new people and I want people to trust me. I don't believe in belittling people. I am friendly and respectful and that usually brings in good vibes. When you have good vibes, people want to work with you.

What, or who inspires you?

My dad is a master electrician and he is my greatest inspiration. I’ve also met great journeymen here who have supported and inspired me.

What advice would you give to young women entering this profession or industry?

Don't be afraid! Never give up, always believe in yourself and maintain a positive attitude because at the end of the day money can't buy happiness - you have to be happy with yourself.
